Apple launched visionOS 27 for Vision Pro headsets this week. Read our extensive rundown of all the biggest features & improvements.

The game comes with 140 original tracks totaling over 7.5 hours of music from a variety of genres, but the real trick is that players can also import their own DRM-free songs. The game will then analyze those tracks and generate levels based on the song’s characteristics.

Gameplay takes place in either the player’s physical surroundings or in fully immersive environments, and follows a formula that players of Beat Saber and other VR and mixed reality rhythm games will find familiar. Slice the blocks or bonk the orbs as they shoot toward you along with the music.

The idea of a game that can instantly create a level based on the structure of any piece of music was first dreamed up by Masaya Matsuura, creator of PaRappa the Rapper, way back in the late 1990s.

Matsuura and his colleagues at his studio, NanaOn-sha, developed Vib Ribbon, a game that pioneered this tech by allowing players to swap the game disc for virtually any music CD. Through some incredibly inventive code, the game and PlayStation hardware would then create a totally unique level based on whatever song was playing.

So innovative was Vib Ribbon and its underlying technology that Sony patented the technique.

Flow Chaser is available now on Apple Vision Pro for $14.99.
