FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR Leaves PC VR Early Access Today With New Features & A New Price

Carnage-fueled racer FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR has gone to its 1.0 full release, adding multiple new features and a price increase to $29.99.

Version 1.0 adds multiple new features and content, including one that Flat2VR Studios’ Elliott Tate teased to me in our interview earlier this year: first-person vehicle ejections. Anyone willing to test their VR sea legs in Stunt mode or crashes in races (like me) is free to do so with a first-person camera instead of the Early Access method that shifted to third person view in such cases.

Here’s a list of the new additions:

  • An overhaul to the multiplayer system redesigns the lobbies to be faster to get into a race. You can also now join active sessions, fill out your lobbies with AI racers and spectator functions including passenger ride-alongs.
  • AI settings to tweak the behavior of non-human opponents. The opponent AI has also been improved overall.
  • Support for bHaptics, motion rigs, and additional steering wheels.
  • New options for FlatOut 2 physics.
  • New vehicles, including multiple cars and a motorcycle.
  • Updated UI and menu interactions, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.

The new price now matches the original FlatOut 4’s cost. The VR port was originally $19.99 in Early Access. Price increases out of Early Access are not uncommon in gaming. Just to name a few examples, Forefront VR did the same earlier this year and Beat Saber went from $19.99 to $29.99 in 2019 when it went to full release. Pavlov Shack was a free-to-play beta for over two years on App Lab before its official release on the Meta Horizon Store when it shifted to a $19.99 cost.

FlatOut is the first release under Flat2VR’s Spark program, an initiative pairing experienced VR modders with game developers. The second Spark release was I Am Your Beast VR last month. I shared my impressions of FlatOut 4 at release and said it was “a joy to play.” Since release, it has received multiple updates to add support for ‘hundreds’ of wheel-and-pedal accessories before its Early Access exit.
