VR fitness app FunFitLand has added knee strikes to its CombatFit workout series.
FunFitLand’s version of knee strikes includes a familiar “grab and smash” mechanic, where the user grabs an overhead target and pulls it downward while at the same time lifting their leg to “smash” the target with their knee. It’s far more complicated to describe in writing than to actually perform the move.
I’ve been beta testing the moves through two rounds of iteration, and the finished product works very well, providing a satisfying new mechanic that delivers a solid abdominal workout. The moment of impact delivers the visual and auditory feedback (and haptic feedback when using controllers) that FunFitLand is so adept at delivering.
FunFitLand founder Meng Zhang says they have no plans to add knee strikes to their modes, SwingFit and FlowFit, at this time. He said they work well in CombatFit because of the “percussive” nature of the hits, and knee strikes would be disruptive to the more flowing nature of those other sessions. He shared that user feedback during beta testing aligns with this view, with users in the beta calling this out as well.

Another learning from beta feedback was that the two-handed grab mechanic helped users balance more effectively during the knee strike, as opposed to a leg lift-only type of move. I can confirm this is true for me as well. The upper body motion of grabbing the target and pulling it down to meet my rising knee is far more stable than raising my knee by itself.
Zhang says that the knee strike tutorial will play automatically when a user selects a workout containing them for the first time. Should the user want to review it, the tutorial is available to replay any time as well. Users will also be able to disable knee strikes in settings should they wish.
